Bodalicious Seasonal Blog Summer

Summer is upon us in the Southern Hemisphere, time to get out the camping gear, the swimwear, polish the BBQ’s and start thinking about the festive season ahead

Summer is all about completion and growth, expanding and being outwards. This fits the Seasonal celebrations while living in the Southern Hemisphere.

Summer also comes with one of the Five Climates specified by TCM, and in Australia we noticeably have to deal with the Heat that the Summers bring with it. Heat also corresponds to the Fire element which relates to our internal organs of the Heart, Small Intestines, Pericardium and Tripple warmer.

Hot conditions are often associated with thirst, dryness, constipation, difficult urination, agitation, a desire for cold, and an aversion to warm foods, drinks and climate.

To unify with the Summer, a Yang season, TCM suggests we express the Yang principle, expansion, growth, lightness, outward activity, brightness and creativity.

The following suggestions for lifestyle and diet are reflecting this principle:

Summer is a period of luxurious growth. To be in harmony with the atmosphere of Summer, awaken early in the morning and reach to the sun for nourishment. Work, play, travel, be joyful and grow into selfless service.

To be staying balanced and keep your cool over the Summer months ahead I suggest drinking plenty of fresh and filtered water, room temperatures preferred over icy cold drinks, since the cold water will injure your intestines and can cause cramping and difficulties with digestion.

Use plenty of bright-colored Summer fruits and vegetables, and enjoy creating beautiful meals; make a dazzling display with the colors of the food, and design a floral arrangement for the table.

Cook lightly and regularly add a little spicy, pungent or even fiery flavor. When sauteing, use high heat for a short time and steam or simmer foods as quickly as possible. Use little salt and more water

Summer offers an abundant variety, and the diet should reflect this. Minerals and oils are sweated out of the body, and their loss can cause weakness if they are not replenished by a varied diet.

To be more comfortable, drink hot liquids and take warm showers to induce sudden sweating and cool the body.

The supernatural forces of the Summer create Heat in the Heavens and Fire on Earth; they create the heart and pulse within the body, the red color and the ability to express laughter, they create the bitter flavor and the emotions of happiness and joy.

So by looking after ourselves and our physical needs we all will be able to enjoy a fabulous and balanced Festive Season ahead of us.
